Thanks to organisers Derek and Mary for inviting us to share the Ride a Cock Horse Folk Club's 6th birthday party. It was good to spend a little time also catching up with old friends Bill and Jim from the Night Owl Jug band. Part One</title><content type='html'>&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Those of you who have been along to an Armpit gig lately will know that, at long last, we have a Bob Dylan song in the act! &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;She belongs to Me has been a regular part of the act over the last few months and seems to go down well with the audience. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Few people realise that, i&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;n the early  formative years of Bob's career, there was quite a strong jug band influence.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;One of Dylan's earliest bootleg recordings known as The Minnesota Party Tape includes Bob's own version of a great jug band classic KC Moan by the Memphis Jug band.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;In 1961 at one of Dylan's early performances at Gerdes Folk City in New York he is joined by the founder of one of the finest 60's revival jug bands...Mr Jim Kweskin.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;When Bob came to England in 1963 he turned up at Dobells Record Shop in London with Richard Farina and Eric von Schmidt and recorded the old jug band favourite Overseas Stomp which has been in the Armpit Jug Band repertoire now for many years. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;For more information about Dylan's visit to London in the winter of '62 &amp; 63 read my contribution to "ISIS A Bob Dylan Anthology" Edited by Derek Barker and published by Helter Skelter. &lt;/span&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt; &lt;/span&gt;&lt;div class="blogger-post-footer"&gt;&lt;img width='1' height='1' src='https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/tracker/11191667-111226710084956262?l=worldinajug.blogspot.com' alt='' /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;</content><link rel='edit' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/11191667/posts/default/111226710084956262'/><link rel='self' type='application/atom+xml' href='http://www.blogger.com/feeds/11191667/posts/default/111226710084956262'/><link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://worldinajug.blogspot.com/2005/03/bob-dylan-jug-band-connection-part-one.html' title='Bob Dylan &amp; the Jug Band Connection. Linda and I were there to see Bob Dylan at the Liverpool Empire. Before the show we went across to the Docks to visit Peter Blake's self portrait with badges at the Tate Gallery.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:times new roman;font-size:130%;"&gt;Linda took the photo coming up. Portrait of Stringbean in the style of Peter Blake.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-family:times new roman;font-size:130%;"&gt;The Dylan show in the evening was superb. We had great seats front row of the balcony. You could almost stretch out and touch Bob. He was there to talk about an exhibition at the V&amp;A in London about Badges. The interview was held in his studio and he opened a drawer and pulled out a badge at random.......and said&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;"Here you are The Armpit Jug Band Number One Fan. I don't know who they are but I love the name." &lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Funny thing is that I am a number one  fan of Peter Blake.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;One of Peter Blake's best known paintings 'Self Portrait with Badges' can be seen at the Tate Gallery in Liverpool and is all about portraying himself as a fan embracing popular culture. It was recorded one weekend at a small freezing hut/recording studio on an airfield somewhere in Warwickshire.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;The late Monty Bird was the engineer and John Golding was the producer.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;The line up on the photo:&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;Stringbean Cumming (seated left), Hot Lips Haines, Jazz Beasley, Gilbert Lawrence, T-Bone Axeman Jones (seated right).&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size:130%;"&gt;The Fletch was one of  our early venues. It was an excellent folk club and was run by Dave Sampson.A regular member of the audience in those early days was Rowan Atkinson. Dave is still running the Wurzel Bush club in Brinklow and we are still invited to play there.
